Translate Hindi Video to English: Captions, Dubbing and Hinglish
If you want to translate Hindi video to English while you watch, the quickest route in Chrome is to use the video's own captions. Turn on the Hindi (or already-translated) caption track, then either read English subtitles or let an extension turn those captions into an English voice track that plays over the original. The video has to have captions for any of this to work.

What you need
- Chrome on a desktop or laptop. Mobile browsers are not supported.
- A video with a caption track the player exposes: Hindi captions, English captions, or auto-generated ones.

Step by step: translate video from Hindi to English
- Open the video and start playing it.
- Turn captions on in the player. On YouTube that is the CC button or Settings (gear) > Subtitles/CC. Pick the Hindi track if there is one.
- Click the Dub button that appears on the video.
- In the on-video controls, set the target language to English, then pick the mode, the translation engine and the voice.
- Press play. The extension translates the captions, builds a separate English speech track, syncs it to the player and plays it with the original Hindi audio turned down underneath. You can also show the translated English subtitles on screen.
On the free path you get Standard mode, Google Translate for the text and on-device Piper voices. Speech is generated inside the extension, so it is not sent to a remote TTS service. If you only want English subtitles
Sometimes reading is enough. YouTube can do this without any extension: open Settings (gear) > Subtitles/CC > Auto-translate and choose English. That converts the Hindi caption track into English text. It gives you nothing to listen to, and it only exists on YouTube, but for a short clip it is often all you need.

What makes Hindi video to English translation tricky
The steps above are the same for every language, but the quality of the English you get depends on the source captions, and Hindi captions have some habits of their own.
Hinglish in the captions
A lot of Hindi speech, especially in tech tutorials, vlogs and coaching videos, switches to English mid-sentence: "Is function ko call karo, phir output check karo." Captions follow that mix, and mixed sentences are where machine translation tends to slip: English words can get translated a second time, dropped, or reordered strangely. Expect some awkward lines in heavily mixed videos. If you have PRO, compare the LLM engine with Google Translate on a few minutes of the video before you commit to a long course.
Devanagari vs romanized captions
Hindi captions come in two scripts. Official and auto-generated tracks usually use Devanagari. Many creators write their own captions in romanized Hindi ("aap kaise ho"). Translation engines handle Hindi best in Devanagari; romanized Hindi can be mistaken for English or treated as noise, and the English that comes out may be hard to follow. If a video offers both, choose the Devanagari track. If the only track is romanized, expect rough output.
Auto-caption availability
YouTube auto-generates captions for many languages, and plenty of Hindi uploads have them. Quality depends on audio: clean studio speech comes out much better than a crowded street interview or fast regional dialect. Errors in the Hindi captions carry straight into the English voice, because the extension translates the caption text, not the audio. Open the CC menu first to see what the video actually offers. Some uploads have no captions at all.
Honorifics, names and idioms
Hindi marks respect in grammar (aap, tum, tu) and with suffixes like "-ji". English has no direct match, so all three become "you" and "-ji" is either dropped or kept as-is, which flattens the tone of a conversation. Names of people, towns and dishes sometimes get translated literally when they match ordinary words. Idioms such as "naak kat gayi" can come out word for word if the engine does not recognise them.
Limits
This is a caption-based tool. It does not transcribe audio, so a Hindi video without captions cannot be translated with it. It does not do lip sync or voice cloning, import or export SRT/VTT files, render or download a translated video, work on uploaded local files, read burned-in on-screen text, or run in mobile browsers. DRM-protected streaming services such as Netflix and Prime Video, and live streams, are not supported.
